Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine brought back several fan-favorite characters from Fox’s X-Men universe. However, one key figure was missing — Josh Brolin’s Cable. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld recently addressed the character’s absence on X (formerly Twitter), sparking speculation. Fans have questioned why Cable, a significant figure in Deadpool 2, was not included in the latest installment. The film featured many multiverse elements and callbacks, making the character’s exclusion more noticeable.
Rob Liefeld claims Josh Brolin’s Cable was ‘blocked’ from Deadpool & Wolverine
Rob Liefeld, co-creator of Deadpool, has alleged that Marvel Studios prevented Josh Brolin’s Cable from appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine. On January 8, 2025, Liefeld wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Shouldn’t have blocked him from Deadpool & Wolverine. All time boner move.” He also shared fan art of Brolin as DC’s Darkseid.
Brolin, who portrayed Cable in Deadpool 2, confirmed in February 2024 that he would likely not return for the third installment. Despite this, Cable remains a key figure in the franchise and is referenced twice in Deadpool & Wolverine. In one scene, Deadpool tells Happy Hogan that the X-Force team “didn’t test well in the focus group, particularly Cable.” Later, he asks Mr. Paradox, “Is this because I used Cable’s time machine?” referring to Deadpool 2’s post-credits scene.
Brolin has expressed interest in returning to the MCU, saying in an interview with Collider in December 2024 that he would take on “anything that the Russos wanted me to do.” Joe and Anthony Russo are confirmed to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, leading to growing speculation about Brolin’s possible return as Thanos in these films.
There is currently no official confirmation regarding Brolin’s involvement in future MCU projects, whether as Cable or Thanos. Fans are still waiting for updates on his status.
