The Substance Director Coralie Fargeat Talks Next Movie: ‘Going To Be Totally Different’

The Substance director Coralie Fargeat has given an update about her next movie.

Fargeat made her feature film directorial debut in 2017 with Revenge, a violent thriller movie starring Matilda Lutz. She followed that up with 2024’s The Substance, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.

Now, speaking with Variety, Fargeat has started to think about what her next film project will be.

What did Coralie Fargeat say about her next project after The Substance?

When asked if she’s begun work on another project yet after The Substance, Fargeat said, “For now I’m not discussing anything. I’m just enjoying the moment and taking some time as I really want to write my next project. It’s slowly starting to be put in motion in the back of my brain and when things calm down I’ll take it from there.”

She further elaborated on the idea that’s building in the back of her brain, “It’s going to be totally different but with a lot of similarities. I love to make bold and surprising films with things that you don’t expect, so definitely that’s what I want to do. And I love the freedom that I gave myself for this film and that’s certainly something I want to keep doing. That was the greatest thing for me on The Substance.”

One thing is for sure: Whatever Fargeat is working on next won’t be a sequel to The Substance.

She told Variety earlier this month, “The point of this movie is to present fresh things to the world. No sequels. No prequels. No number two, number three. I’m going to be so happy to bring something else fresh to the world in a bit.”

The Substance — which stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid — is now streaming on Mubi. It is also available to rent or purchase on digital services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
