Wicked Director Jon M. Chu Gives Update on Britney Spears Biopic Movie

Jon M. Chu has provided an update regarding the upcoming Britney Spears biopic movie.

It was announced in August 2024 that Chu had been tapped to direct a biopic about Britney Spears. The movie will be based on Spears’ 2023 memoir novel, The Woman in Me, which was published by Gallery Books.

Chu recently directed Wicked starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, along with the upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good, which will be released in November 2024.

What did Jon M. Chu say about the Britney Spears biopic movie?

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, per Entertainment Weekly, Chu said that Spears will be “very involved” with the movie.

“I haven’t really started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach, but it’s very early,” he said.

No casting announcements regarding who will play Spears in the movie have been officially made, yet.

“I’ve seen all fan castings and I always take those into consideration, because maybe there’s a good idea out there,” Chu said. “But we’ll have to see what the approach of the movie is before we know who’s right for it.”

Chu also told Billboard, “I’m a big fan of Britney. I’ve been a fan since I was young and she was young and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium,” Chu told Billboard before the Golden Globes. “So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’ll see. We’re developing it now and it’s a long road ahead.”

Prior to making the Wicked movies, Chu made his feature film directorial debut in 2008 with Step Up 2: The Streets. He then went on to direct 2010’s Step Up 3D, 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, 2015’s Jem and the Holograms, 2016’s Now You See Me 2, 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, and 2021’s In the Heights.

A release date for Chu’s Britney Spears biopic has not yet been announced.
