Live-Action He-Man Movie Will Be ‘Quite Different’ From Animated Show, Says Nicholas Galitzine

Nicholas Galitzine says the new, live-action He-Man movie won’t be like the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated cartoon series.

It was officially announced last year that Travis Knight would direct a live-action Masters of the Universe movie for Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel. It was then revealed in May 2024 that Galitzine — known for starring in 2023’s Red, White & Royal Blue, 2024’s The Idea of You, and more — had been tapped to play He-Man in the film.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Galitzine was asked if he’d begun preparing for the role by watching any of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe show.

What did Nicholas Galitzine say about He-Man and Masters of the Universe?

“I have, yeah,” he answered. “Look, what I will say is our version is quite different from the original animation, which we all agree was camp within its own right and worked so well for the time. But there’s been a couple of iterations, obviously since there was the Revelation version of Master of the Universe, and the comics themselves. And we’re very much treating our script as as Bible, you know. But it’s kind of amazing to hear what this show meant to a lot of people. It was really formative for a lot of people, so it’s exciting to do something that will have a nostalgia element as well as hopefully attract a bunch of new fans.”

Along with Galitzine, Knight’s Masters of the Universe movie will star Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Duncan, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time. Masters of the Universe currently has a June 5, 2026, release date in the United States.
