Andrew Garfield Addresses Rumors of Playing Jesus in New Martin Scorsese Movie

Andrew Garfield has addressed rumors stating he’d be playing Jesus in a new Martin Scorsese movie.

Scorsese, who previously made The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, announced in May 2023 that he had plans to make a new movie about Jesus. The announcement came after he and his wife, Helen Morris, met privately with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

It was later reported that Garfield was potentially being eyed by Scorsese to play Jesus in the film.

There were conflicting reports about this at the time. Variety wrote in April 2024, “Scorsese would like to reunite with Silence star Andrew Garfield for the Jesus project, though it’s unclear if the 40-year-old actor is being eyed for the titular role or to play one of the disciples. (Scholars believe Jesus died sometime between the ages of 33 and 38).” At the same time, it was reported that Miles Teller was also potentially being eyed for a role in the film.

World of Reel then reported in July 2024 that Garfield’s participation was definitely happening.

What did Andrew Garfield say about the Martin Scorsese’s Jesus movie rumors?

Speaking with GQ UK, Garfield addressed that there was a “rumor” floating around about him playing Jesus; however, “it is not true to [Garfield’s] knowledge.

He noted, “I like working as well. You can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call, ’cause he makes a movie every three years, and a lot of the time Leo DiCaprio is in it.”

A release date for Scorsese’s Jesus movie has not yet been announced.

Garfield, meanwhile, recently starred alongside Florence Pugh in 2024’s We Live in Time, which was directed by John Crowley. He’ll soon be seen playing a character named Henrik Gibson in Luca Guadagnino’s new movie, After the Hunt, which also stars Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri.
