One of Babygirl‘s most memorable moments features a needle drop from INXS’ famous song “Never Tear Us Apart,” a song that director Halina Reijn was secured after Nicole Kidman stepped in to help.
Speaking to the ReelBlend Podcast in a recent interview, Reijn revealed that the scene — which features a montage between Kidman’s Romy Mathis and Harris Dickinson’s Samuel — always had the song in it during the editing process, but A24 was having trouble securing the rights to it.
After lamenting to Kidman about the inability to secure the rights, Reijn said the legendary actress stepped in and made it happen.
What did Nicole Kidman do to get the song in Babygirl?
“We put [the song] on the montage… I almost cried, my editor and I were screaming. Next day I call A24 and I’m like, ‘We need the rights to this song.’ [A24] tried it but it was a hard no [from INXS’ people]. I didn’t sleep for a week. I tried every other song but nothing worked. Then I called Nicole, I was like, ‘I’m so depressed.’ She was like, ‘Give me a couple of days.’ And she did it! She got the rights for us.”
Babygirl is written and directed by Bodies Bodies Bodies filmmaker Halina Reijn. The film is also produced by Reijn along with David Hinojosa and Julia Oh. The ensemble cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Esther McGregor, Vaughan Reilly, Sophie Wilde, Gaite Jansen, Izabel Mar, Victor Slezak, Anoop Desai, Leslie Silva, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, and more. During its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.
Besides Babygirl, Kidman will also next be seen in the thriller movie Welcome to Holland with Gael Garcia Bernal and in the long-awaited Practical Magic sequel with Sandra Bollock. She’s also set to star in a few major TV projects, including Scarpetta with Jamie Lee Curtis and Margo’s Got Money Troubles with Michelle Pfeiffer.
