Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler recently opened up about the decision to cast Keanu Reeves in the film, as well as what fans might be able to expect in the upcoming fourth movie.
What did Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s director say?
Speaking to Variety in a recent interview, Fowler joked that there were some parallels between Reeves’ Shadow the Hedgehog and John Wick, the character he’s played throughout the action franchise. Fowler said that Reeves was “the perfect fit” for Shadow, though, due to his familiarity with the type of roles.
“There are obvious parallels between John Wick and Shadow,” Fowler said. “But Keanu has always played complex, brooding characters with a real edge to them. He was the perfect fit.”
When it came to a potential fourth movie, which is reported to be in the works now, Fowler didn’t offer up too much info. However, he said that the world of the Sonic movies can keep growing, and he feels like they’ve only just begun.
“We can keep growing the world and growing the family of Sonic characters,” said Fowler. “I feel like we’re just hitting our stride.”
“Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”
Ben Schwartz returns to play Sonic the Hedgehog in the new movie, while the voice cast also includes Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog. James Marsden will reprise his role as Tom Wachowski. The live-action cast also features Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, Cristo Fernández, Alyla Browne, and more.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is out now in theaters.
