An animated Ghostbusters movie is in the works at Netflix, with Deadline reporting that a director has also been attached to the in-development project.
Who is directing the animated Ghostbusters movie?
According to Deadline’s report, Sony Animation and Netflix have tapped Kris Pearn to direct the project. Pearn has a long history in the world of animation, having co-directed the 2013 animated sequel Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, and most recently, directing 2020’s The Willoughbys.
Other information about the movie, including any writers or casting news, is unknown as of now. Also unknown is the film’s plot details, which Deadline says are being kept under wraps by the studios, so it’s unclear just how the movie will fit into the larger Ghostbusters franchise. Netflix was reported to also be working on a Ghostbusters animated series, but it’s unclear whether this is connected in any way.
Although nothing is known about the project, Deadline’s report notes that the hope is that the animated movie could do for Ghostbusters what Spider-Verse has done for Sony’s Spider-Man IP. The Marvel property has not only been massively successful at the box office, but have spawned future projects and popular characters.
The movie is just one of several ventures for the Ghostbusters franchise following its revival in 2016 and subsequent reboot in 2021. The franchise’s latest film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, released earlier this year, and starred Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, and Celeste O’Connor.
Although Frozen Empire received mostly mixed reviews, Gil Kenan (the director of the film) did hint that more movies could be coming.
