Mortal Kombat, the latest adaptation of the video game series of the same name, came out in 2021. While the critical response to the movie was somewhat lukewarm, the general audience loved it, leading to the announcement of a sequel. It was previously announced that the fan-favorite character Kano, portrayed by Josh Lawson, would return in Mortal Kombat 2. In a recent interview, Lawson spoke about his character’s return and teased what the fans could expect from the upcoming movie.
Josh Lawson teases Kano’s return from the dead in Mortal Kombat 2
Josh Lawson confirmed in a new interview that Kano would come back from the dead in the Mortal Kombat sequel. In the first movie, Kano is initially one of the potential defenders of Earthrealm and awakens his Arcana, which enables him to shoot lasers out of his cybernetic eye. However, Kabal persuades Kano to betray Earth, and the latter is eventually killed during a confrontation with Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), who gains his Arcana.
Lawson spoke to The Direct and reflected on his character’s fate and what was in store for Kano in the sequel. “I can say that in the second ‘Mortal Kombat,’ Kano has a new chapter in his life, that [chapter] being death,” he explained.
Josh Lawson hinted that death would change Kano and create a Kano 2.0 in the process. “And you know, death alters you,” he said. “So yeah, prepare yourselves for a Kano 2.0. As we all know, if anyone’s a fan of games, Kano’s alliances can change at the drop of a hat, and that’s certainly true in the second one… [It’s going to] keep you on your toes guessing [about] who Kano’s kind of siding with,” he further stated.
Mortal Kombat is a fictional universe where death isn’t the end of everything. In fact, Shang Tsung claims in the movie that death was “just another portal.” Lawson’s recent comments underscore Tsung’s words and indicate that Kano’s story is far from over.
