The Imitation Game star was present at this year’s Tokyo Comic Convention. There, he confirmed his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 6.
When asked about appearing in the upcoming Avengers movies, Benedict Cumberbatch showed excitement to work with The Russo Brothers and even Robert Downey Jr., who will be the big bad in Avengers: Doomsday. He told TV Groove:
“I’m really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there’s going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I’m excited to see what happens next.”
Additionally, the actor spoke to Variety about his MCU return at the Red Sea Film Festival. Speaking of Doctor Strange, he stated that his superhero persona is a “complex man motivated by a need to control everything at any cost.” Cumberbatch added:
“I am interested in seeing where these costs take him. There is a lot more to play, and it’s very exciting.”
Hence, fans can expect a lot from Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange throughout Phase 6, starting with Avengers: Doomsday. Besides the Avengers outings, there have been talks of Doctor Strange 3 as well. But the timeline and placement of the sequel are yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios.
The Master of the Mystic Arts was last spotted in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness post-credits scene. In it, Clea took Doctor Strange to the Dark Dimension. Now, whether his dark dimension story is told in Avengers: Doomsday or takes place in Doctor Strange 3 remains to be seen.
