Steven Spielberg’s Next Sci-Fi Movie Casts Challengers’ Josh O’Connor

Challengers’ Josh O’Connor has been cast in Steven Spielberg’s next movie.

Spielberg is working on a new, still untitled sci-fi movie that stars Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, O’Connor has now joined officially joined the cast of the movie. It is not yet clear who he will be playing.

O’Connor is known for playing Patrick Zweig in 2024’s Challengers, which was directed by Luca Guadagnino. He additionally played Arthur in 2023’s La Chimera, while his filmography also includes 2015’s Cinderella, 2016’s Florence Foster Jenkins, 2017’s God’s Own Country, and 2020’s Emma, among other titles.

O’Connor played James in three episodes of Peak Blinders and Lawrence Durrell in 26 episodes of The Durrells. He’ll soon be seen in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, also known as Knives Out 3, while he was also recently cast alongside John Magaro and Alana Haim in Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind.

Official plot details for Steven Spielberg’s next movie remain under wraps at this time; although, previous reports have described it as an “original UFO story.”

The screenplay for the film is being written by David Koepp, who previously worked with Spielberg on titles such as 1993’s Jurassic Park, 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park, 2005’s War of the Worlds, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Kristie Macosko Krieger serves as a producer on the film.

Spielberg’s most recent film was 2022’s The Fabelmans, which he co-wrote with Tony Kushner. Prior to that, he made West Side Story in 2021, Ready Player One in 2018, The Post in 2017, and The BFG in 2016.

Steven Spielberg’s next movie has been given a May 15, 2026, release date from Universal Pictures.
