Dwayne Johnson has recently revealed that the inspiration behind releasing his upcoming movie Red One in IMAX was none other than Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The upcoming Jake Kasdan directorial features Chris Evans and JK Simmons alongside Johnson. Although Red One packs a big star cast, it has been unable to please the critics and has earned a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
Dwayne Johnson saw Oppenheimer and thought Red One in IMAX could be ‘game over’
Red One is set to open in theatres in the United States on November 15, 2024.
Hence, continuing the promotion of his movie, Dwayne Johnson recently sat down for an interview with IMAX. There, he explained in detail why they chose to release Red One in IMAX. The actor said, “With ‘Red One,’ our intention was to make a movie that you can enjoy on the biggest screen possible. Legitimately the biggest screens possible are Imax.”
Johnson further revealed how he watched the 2023 movie Oppenheimer in IMAX and he chose to enjoy it at the same spot where Christopher Nolan sat to watch his movies. He added, “I was midway through shooting ‘Red One’ and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched in the Imax theater where Christopher Nolan watches and screens his movies. Him and Emma [Thomas], his wife. I even asked to let me sit where Chris sits. They said, ‘Chris sits here.'”
The actor further disclosed how he texted the director of Red One, Jake Kasdan to have IMAX screens for the film. He revealed, “I watch Oppenheimer. It was amazing, but I was thinking: ‘Holy s**t. “Red One” on this screen and with this technology could be game over.’ I remember texting [director Jake Kasdan] a picture of my bare chest and a picture of the screen and we realized how cool [Imax] would be.”
Although Red One is getting an IMAX release, the movie is not looking at attaining an opening weekend like Oppenheimer. As reported earlier, Red One can have an opening between $30 to $35 million following its release. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer earned $82.4 million in the opening weekend, as per Box Office Mojo.
