Channing Tatum‘s Gambit quickly became a fan-favorite performance in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, so much so that Ryan Reynolds claims Marvel Studios is now infatuated with the star.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly for their Awardist podcast, Reynolds said that Tatum’s performance as Gambit has left Marvel Studios “obsessed,” and while he doesn’t know if more will come of it, Tatum has shown that his version of the character can work.
What did Ryan Reynolds say about Channing Tatum’s Gambit?
“I honestly don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in the bookkeeping sessions at Marvel, but I do know that they’re obsessed with him in that role,” Reynolds said. “It’s kind of like the same situation I went through. Once you show that it works well, that’s really what they need. Sometimes they just need to see it in action.”
Reynolds also praised Tatum’s unique approach to the character. “And Channing is so singular in how he plays that character, but also he’s so beautiful physically, the way he moves and the way he can pick up steps,” continued Reynolds.
Before 2016’s Deadpool was released, Reynolds wanted to play the character in a solo superhero movie for years. The project looked like it was dead following the negative reactions to 2011’s Green Lantern; however, Deadpool test footage was leaked online in July 2014 to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response, which convinced Fox to move forward.
