The first reactions for Robert Eggers‘ Nosferatu are overwhelmingly positive.
Nosferatu opens in United States theaters this coming December from Focus Features. Directed by Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse), the movie stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.
Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 German film, which was directed by F. W. Murnau, of the same name. That movie, itself, is based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, which was published in 1897.
Following a screening on Thursday, November 9, 2024, the first reactions to Nosferatu have now arrived on social media.
What are people saying about Nosferatu?
Variety’s Jazz Tangcay called the movie “devilishly bloody and grotesque.” Tangcay continued, “Superbly crafted film and great sound design couple with a haunting score. Lily-Rose Depp’s performance is thoroughly gripping. Robert Eggers delivers a perfect remake.”
Critic Courtney Howard said that Nosferatu “goes HARDER than any other horror film this year.” Howard also said, “ A gorgeous grotesquerie of dread-infused terrors & a divine dark delight. Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok is pure sinister nightmare fuel. Lily Rose Depp & Nicholas Hoult’s best work to date.”
Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast said, “Robert Eggers continues to be very much my shit. Lily-Rose Depp ascends to the big leagues. Wow. Would watch Willem Dafoe talk about the occult for hours. So much to love. Will be seeing this one a few times.”
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich commented, “Relatively confident that Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has more writhing sweatily in bed than any other movie ever made (complimentary).”
The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood said Lily-Rose Depp has “a shot” at some Oscar consideration for her performance in the film, while also noting that “Willem Dafoe is having a blast.”
Nosferatu opens in United States theaters on December 25, 2024.
