What is The Outrun about?
“After a decade away in London, 29-year-old Rona (Saoirse Ronan) returns home to the Orkney Islands,” the synopsis reads. “Sober but lonely, she tries to suppress her memory of the events which set her on this journey of recovery. Slowly the mystical land enters her inner world and – one day at a time – Rona finds hope and strength in herself among the heavy gales and the bracingly cold sea. Based on the bestselling memoir by Amy Liptrot, who co-wrote the screenplay with Fingscheidt, The Outrun is an acutely honest drama about addiction and recovery.”
The film is based on a 2016 memoir of the same name by Amy Liptrot. Liptrot co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Liptrot, while Daisy Lewis also contributed to the story.
The cast of the movie also includes Saskia Reeves, Stephen Dillane, Lauren Lyle, Paapa Essiedu, and Izuka Hoyle.
Ronan produced the movie alongside Sarah Brocklehurst, Dominic Norris, and Jack Lowden. Claudia Yusef, Kieran Hannigan, Maria Logan, Anne Sheehan, Luane Gauer, George Hamilton, James Pugh, and Janina Vilsmaier served as executive producers.
Fingscheidt previously made 2019’s System Crasher, which she also wrote, and 2021’s The Unforgivable, the latter of which starred Sandra Bullock, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal. Ronan, meanwhile, can also be seen in Steve McQueen’s Blitz, which is now playing in select theaters before it arrives on Apple TV+ on November 22, 2024.
