A rampaging hippopotamus is on the loose and terrorizing a group of tourists in a new survival thriller movie called Hungry.
Hungry is being sold at the American Film Market by Signature Entertainment. The film is written and directed by James Nunn, who is known for making 2021’s One Shot.
Per Variety, principal photography on the movie is now underway in Malta. The cast has not yet been announced.
What do we know about the Hungry hippo survival thriller movie?
“Hungry centers on a group of holidaymakers who must fight for their lives against a rampaging hippo on the loose after becoming lost in the Louisiana swamplands,” the plot’s description reads.
Signature Entertainment’s Ben Jacques is producing the movie, while Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel both serve as executive producers.
“Key behind-the-scenes talent on the film includes award-winning MUFX designer Dan Martin (The Banshees of Inisherin, Possessor, Infinity Pool) and VFX company Magic Dust VFX (True Detective: Night Country, One Piece) who have both boarded the project to bring Hungry’s hippo to life,” Variety’s article notes.
It’s not immediately clear if Nunn’s film is directly inspired by the classic tabletop game Hungry Hungry Hippos. There was a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie that was announced in 2012; however, there’s been little to no news about the project since then.
Along with One Shot, Nunn’s previous filmography includes 2012’s Tower Block, 2013’s Green Street 3: Never Back Down, 2016’s Elminators, 2017’s The Marine 5: Battleground, 2018’s The Marine 6: Close Quarters, and 2022’s Shark Bait. His most recent film was a sequel to One Shot, titled One More Shot, which starred Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Alexis Knapp, and Tom Berenger.
The American Film Market begins today, November 5, 2024, and goes until Sunday, November 10, 2024. A release date for Hungry has not yet been announced.
