Eddie Redmayne recently weighed in on whether or not the Fantastic Beasts franchise will continue.
The Harry Potter spin-off, which started in 2016 with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, had a bright future ahead of it. The two movies that followed, however, did not quite match the critical reception of the first one — and hopes for the franchise’s future have since dimmed.
Despite previous plans to continue the Fantastic Beasts franchise with more installments, The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022) have received mixed reviews upon their respective theatrical releases.
What is the Fantastic Beasts update?
Of course, some fans are still hoping for the Fantastic Beasts continuation given the franchise’s nature of providing backstories to some familiar Harry Potter characters like Albus Dumbledore and Nagini. However, Redmayne — who played Newt Scamander in the film series — has some disappointing updates on the franchise’s future.
“I think they probably have [seen the last of Newt],” Redmayne told ComicBook. “That was a very frank answer, but yeah. And that’s as far as I know. I mean, you’d have to speak to the people at Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling, but as far as I know, that’s it. I think he may come back in a glimpse in the Universal world in Florida that they’re opening up, in which you may catch a glimpse of what he was up to in Paris.”
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them received favorable responses from critics and audiences alike. Though the third film, The Secrets of Dumbledore, received better critical reception than Crimes of Grindelwald, it still fell short of what the 2016 feature received at the time of its release. Both of the last two films’ box office records, moreover, were not as successful as the first installment.
