28 Years Later Plot Details Shared by Ralph Fiennes, 2nd Movie Is Done Filming

New 28 Years Later story details have been shared by Ralph Fiennes.

28 Years Later is the forthcoming sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. Directed by Danny Boyle, it will kickstart a new trilogy of 28 Days Later movies.

Fiennes has been tapped to star in Boyle’s new horror flick alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Jack O’Connell. Speaking with IndieWire, the Harry Potter actor shared some new details about the film’s storyline.

What did Ralph Fiennes say about 28 Years Later?

“It’s three films, of which two have been shot,” Fiennes said. “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”

According to IndieWire, Fiennes will play the doctor in the film, which also stars Erin Kellyman and Edvin Ryding.

Cillian Murphy, who played the lead role in 28 Days Later, is serving as an executive producer on the movie. According to Sony Motion Pictures Group’s Tom Rothman, via Deadline, Murphy will also reprise his role as Jim in the film; although, he’ll do so in a “surprising way and in a way that grows.”

The second movie in the trilogy is currently titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple. It is being directed by Nia DaCosta, who previously made 2018’s Little Woods, 2021’s Candyman, and 2023’s The Marvels.

28 Years Later will be released in United States theaters on June 20, 2025, from Sony Pictures Releasing.
