Allison Williams says the effects of the first M3GAN movie will be weighing on Gemma in M3GAN 2.0.
M3GAN was released in United States theaters in January 2022. The Blumhouse horror movie about the killer doll powered by artificial intelligence starred Williams as Gemma, Violet McGraw as Cady, and Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN.
A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is now in the works, along with a spin-off that is titled SOULM8TE.
Speaking to ComingSoon following the New York Comic Con BlumFest panel, Williams explained how Gemma has changed in M3GAN 2.0 since the events of the first movie.
What did Allison Williams say about M3GAN 2.0?
“The effects of the first movie are very clear on Gemma as the second movie starts, and I think that’s kind of all I can say is that it’s very clear that she lived through the things that we saw her live through in the first movie, and she has adjusted life accordingly,” she said.
Williams continued, “In this franchise, my job is kind of playing it very straight and keeping it kind of real so that the audience can kind of relate to my experience. Although, there are other characters who are also the cipher for the audience occasionally. Yeah, it’s playing it straight, but also, when you’re in the horror genre, you have to have big reactions to things, and the stakes are really high, and everything’s heightened. And so it’s also a game of pushing yourself to an 11, and then with me, that’s still gonna be kind of grounded. Like, I don’t really have that really big performance that I like to do in these movies. So yeah, it’s kind of a dance in that way.”
Along with Williams, McGraw and Davis are both returning for M3GAN 2.0, which is directed by Gerard Johnstone. The cast also includes Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, and Jemaine Clement.
M3GAN 2.0 will be released in United States theaters on June 27, 2025, from Universal Pictures. SOULM8TE, meanwhile, is currently dated for January 2, 2026.
