Scream fans may not have seen the last of Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher.
Lillard played Stu Macher in 1996’s Scream, which was directed by Wes Craven. While the film kickstarted a beloved horror franchise, Lillard’s character was seemingly killed at the end of the movie and has not been seen in any of the sequels.
Kevin Williamson is now helming Scream 7, which will see Neve Campbell reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. While nothing has been confirmed at this time, Lillard is hinting that Stu could potentially make some kind of return.
What did Matthew Lillard say about Stu’s potential Scream return?
Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, Lillard said he believes Stu is “definitely alive.”
When asked if fans could see Stu come back in another Scream movie, Lillard said, “That would be fun. I would love it. If it made sense, if it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it, then sure.”

During New York Comic Con, Lillard told GameSpot that he’s not in Scream 7; however, he then said, “And even if I was, I would lie directly to your face. Until the day it came out, I would just lie to you.”
Scream 7 is written by Guy Busick. James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein are producing the movie, while Radio Silence will serve as executive producers.
Plot details for Scream 7 remain under wraps at this time. Melissa Barrera will not be reprising her role as Sam Carpenter in the film as she was fired by Spyglass Media in 2023 over ver comments she made about the Israel-Hammas war. Jenna Ortega is also not reprising her role as Tara Carpenter.
Scream 7 will be released in United States theaters on February 27, 2026.
