Martin Scorsese Filming Concert Movie This Week Paying Tribute to Robbie Robertson

Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese is set to direct a tribute concert movie for Robbie Robertson. The upcoming concert is called Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson

Scorsese will direct the filming of the tribute concert this Thursday night. This won’t be the first time the filmmaker has helmed a concert film for the late musician. Scorsese directed the concert film The Last Waltz, which was released in 1978. It also serves as Robertson’s last concert with his group The Band. 

Robertson had worked on various movie and television soundtracks and was a frequent Scorsese collaborator. He served as either a music consultant or composer in several films directed by Scorsese, including Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Color of Money, Casino, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Irishman

His last collaboration with Scorsese was in the 2023 Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon

Who are the artists involved in Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson?

Per Variety’s report, the artists performing at the show  — which will be held at the Kia Forum on Thursday — include Trey Anastasio, Warren Haynes, Bruce Hornsby, Eric Church, Eric Clapton, Jim James, Daniel Lanois, Taj Mahal, Robert Randolph, Nathaniel Rateliff, Van Morrison, Margo Price, Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples, Bobby Weir, and Allison Russell. The house band will include  Ryan Bingham, Jamey Johnson, Mike Campbell, John Medeski, Dave Malone, and more. 

In addition to directing the concert movie, Scorsese also serves as the concert’s executive producer alongside Jared Levine, Keith Wortman, and Scooter Weintraub.

Robertson was Bob Dylan’s lead guitarist as well as The Band’s guitarist and songwriter before embarking on his solo career. The renowned musician passed away on August 9, 2023, at the age of 80.
