Kevin Costner to Star, Co-Write New Surfing Thriller Movie Headhunters

Kevin Costner has been tapped to co-write and star in Headhunters, a new thriller movie about surfing.

Costner recently directed Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 and Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2, the former of which is currently streaming on Max while the latter held its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival last month.

While Costner says he still plans on making Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 3, he’s now boarded a new project.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Costner co-wrote the script for Headhunters with Steven Holleran. Holleran is a cinematographer who will be making his feature film directorial debut with Headhunters.

What else do we know about the Headhunters movie?

“Headhunters casts Costner as Lazer, a washed-up American ex-pat with a mysterious past who finds himself living in Bali, Indonesia,” The Hollywood Reporter’s description of the plot reads. “Lazer recruits a group of surfers led by Bima, a local photographer, on a journey to an uncharted island to pioneer a ‘perfect wave.’ To their surprise, the island is home to an ancient tribe of headhunters guarding the land at all costs. ‘What ensues is an adventure turned survival story of epic and bloody proportions on a tropical island which once seemed to be paradise…but is actually closer to hell,’ per the official logline.”

Station Eleven’s Daniel Zovatto has been tapped to star opposite Costner. Costner also produces the movie alongside Scott Steindorff, Howard Kaplan, Dylan Russell, Lindsay Davis, and Stacey Woods.

“My filmmaking journey got its start in the ocean shooting surf videos in California as a teenager. Twenty years later, Headhunters brings things full circle and connects three life-long passions of mine — surfing, filmmaking, and adventure,” Holleran said of the movie.

Headhunters is expected to begin filming in Hawaii this November. A release date has not yet been set.
