Voltron Live-Action Movie Casts Leading Role, Production Window Announced

Progress is being made on Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Voltron movie.

It was reported in August 2024 that Amazon MGM Studios had won the rights to make a live-action Voltron movie following a bidding war between several companies.

Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye has been cast to play the lead male role in the film. It is expected to begin shooting this fall in Australia.

Quinn-Toye doesn’t have any film credits to his name at this point; however, the young actor starred in an episode of BBC Three’s Badults. He was also an extra on an episode of Outlander and, additionally, was an understudy to Spider-Man’s Tom Holland during the West End production of Romeo and Juliet this past spring.

What else do we know about the live-action Voltron movie?

The live-action Voltron movie is being directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously made 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Undergod Story, 2013’s We’re the Millers, 2016’s Central Intelligence, 2018’s Skyscraper, and 2021’s Red Notice.

“Amazon, Thurber, and the producers conducted a thorough search for the male and female leads, doing screen tests in early and mid-September,” The Hollywood Reporter’s article reads. “Quinn-Toye was one of four to make the shortlist for the male lead. (The female role, which tested three actresses, remains up for grabs.)”

Plot details for the movie remain under wraps at this time. The Voltron franchise is based on Toei Animation’s mecha anime series titled Beast King GoLion, which aired 52 episodes from 1981-1982. The second season of Voltron, which aired during the mid-1980s, was based on an unrelated mecha anime series titled Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.

The script for the movie is written by Ellen Shanman. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman, World Events Productions’ Bob Koplar, Thurber, and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman serve as producers.

A release date for the live-action Voltron movie has not yet been announced.
