Matt Reeves has high hopes for the world of The Batman and has teased the possibility of even more spin-off series coming together to form one big saga.
What did Matt Reeves say about future The Batman spin-offs?
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Reeves said that he and his producing partner Dylan Clark have thought up ideas for more tie-in television projects related to The Batman. His first goal, though, is to make sure that any films regarding Batman focus fully on the character of Bruce Wayne.
“I always wanted to make sure that each of the movies that we did with Rob, that the central arc, the emotional arc of the story would be Batman and Bruce’s,” Reeves explained. “Then when I was talking to Warner Bros. about signing for TV, I said what will be exciting to me is to take characters [where] there’s not enough real estate in a movie to cover their story in full and to really dig into them. I want it to all be this sweeping Batman crime epic.”
Reeves’ plans for a grander Batman universe have gone through some big changes over the past few years. In 2020, a Max series about the Gotham City Police Department was announced and said to be tying into The Batman. However, that project never came to be. Another rumored series about Arkham Asylum was also said to be in the works, although nothing ever came of that project.
A sequel to 2021’s The Batman is in development, with Reeves revealing that the script is finished and plans are underway to begin filming next year. The Penguin, a spin-off to The Batman, also premiered on HBO this week, starring Colin Farrell as he reprises his role as Oz Cobb.
Outside of those projects, it’s unknown what the future holds for The Batman franchise following the overhaul of all DC content in the wake of James Gunn and Peter Safran forming DC Studios.
