Baz Luhrmann Directing Joan of Arc Movie, Title Revealed

Baz Luhrmann has found his next film and will tackle a project set around the story of Joan of Arc.

What do we know about Baz Luhrmann’s Joan of Arc movie?

According to a recent report from Deadline, Luhrmann’s next film will be titled Jehanne or Jehanne d’Arc, which translates from French as either Joan or Joan of Arc. Currently, not a whole lot is known about the film, but Deadline describes it as “an epic story about Joan of Arc.”

The report notes that Luhrmann is looking to cast a young female as “the ultimate teenage girl coming of age story, set in the Hundred Years’ War.”

A patron saint of France, Joan of Arc is a legendary historical figure, who became famous as a defender of the French nation during the Hundred Years’ War in the 1400s. Infamously, Joan claimed to be acting under divine guidance from the archangel Michael in her decision-making. In 1431, after being captured by the English, she was accused of heresy and burned at the stake at the age of 19.

Throughout history, there have been countless depictions of Joan of Arc, including in plays, artwork, fashion, music, and movies. The most recent film project about Joan of Arc came in 2019, with the French drama Joan of Arc directed by Bruno Dumont and starring Lise Leplat Prudhomme in the titular role.

For Luhrmann, this will be yet another film about an incredibly iconic figure in history. His latest film, 2022’s Elvis, covered the life and career of the iconic Elvis Presley. The film was a massive success and earned eight Academy Award nominations, including nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler.
