The Sims Movie Update: Amazon’s Video Game Adaptation Will Feature ‘A Lot of Lore’

The Sims movie being developed by Amazon will contain “a lot of lore.”

In March 2024, it was announced that Loki’s Kate Herron had been tapped to direct a live-action movie based on the popular video game known as The Sims. Herron is co-writing the script with Briony Redman, while Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap is producing.

Per Variety, Electronic Arts [EA] has officially confirmed that the video game movie is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios.

What did EA say about the upcoming Sims movie?

“As we approach the incredible milestone of 25 years of The Sims – which is an incredible feat of longevity in today’s world of entertainment and pop culture – I am thrilled to confirm that ‘The Sims’ will be coming to the big screen,” EA Entertainment’s Laura Miele said. “Teaming up with renowned Hollywood powerhouses, this exciting new chapter for ‘The Sims ‘will bring its magic to millions more fans. It’s a testament to the enduring power of this beloved franchise, which has captivated more than 500 million players for a quarter of a century. Our commitment to innovate across ‘The Sims’ universe of experiences and products will inspire all generations of Simmers.”

Kate Gorman, vice president and general manager for EA Entertainment, said they want to make The Sims movie have “an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie.”

Gorman said that “there will be a lot of lore” in the movie. She continued, “You will see a lot of The Sims universe come to life and you will see a lot of the classic experiences that our players have in the games come to life in the movie. And that’s what we really want to deliver on, is just an authentic Sims experience, and really have the most expansive Sims offering we’ve ever had to bring that delight and share the experience of playing The Sims with so many people or their friends or families who may not have actually played The Sims, but you can help tell that story through watching a theatrical release about The Sims universe.”

Gorman added, “There will be Freezer Bunnies. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized any of those details. But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims.”
