Winner Trailer Previews Dark Comedy Biopic Starring Emilia Jones, Kathryn Newton, & More

Vertical has released the trailer for Winner, a dark comedy biopic starring Emilia Jones (Locke and Key) as the titular American whistleblower and former National Security Agency contractor Reality Winner.

Based on a true story, the upcoming film — directed by Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me) — aims to give a new take on Reality Winner’s story, following HBO’s 2023 Sydney Sweeney-led Reality.

Winner is set to hit theaters on September 13, 2024. In addition to directing, Fogel also wrote the film alongside Kerry Howley.

What happens in the Winner Trailer?

The trailer introduces Reality’s earlier years growing up in Texas as well as her time working with the U.S. Air Force which led to her working for the NSA. The trailer also teases that the upcoming movie will highlight the result of Reality Winner’s decision to leak documents about the Russian government’s plan to interfere in the 2016 United States elections.

The official synopsis for Winner reads as follows:

“Reality Winner is a brilliant young misfit from a Texas border town who loves her pink gun almost as much as helping others. After teaching herself Arabic in high school so she can be of service in the Middle East, Reality is recruited by the Air Force but quickly becomes disillusioned when she finds her morals challenged. After transitioning to a money gig as an NSA contractor, Reality stumbles upon government secrets regarding Russia’s election hacking during the 2016 Presidential campaign. Does she expose the truth or keep quiet? Ultimately, she decides to leak the truth leading to her trial and historic sentencing for espionage.”

Apart from Jones as Reality Winner, the forthcoming biopic also stars Connie Britton as Billie Winner, Danny Ramirez as Andre, Kathryn Newton as Brittany Winner, and Zach Galifianakis as Ron Winner.

Winner hits select theaters and On Demand on September 13.
