Ridley Scott Says Gladiator II Is ‘The Best Thing I’ve Ever Made’

Ridley Scott says that Gladiator II is the “best thing” he’s ever made. Or, at the very least, “one of the best things.”

Gladiator II will be released in United States theaters in November 2024. A sequel to 2000’s Gladiator, which was also directed by Scott, the film stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and more.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Scott revealed that he believes Gladiator II to be “the best thing I’ve ever made.”

Scott then slightly walked back the comment, as he then said it’s “one of the best things” he’s done. He further noted, “I’ve made a few good ’uns.”

The director has made similar comments about Gladiator II before, as he told Empire Magazine in July 2024 that the movie opens with “probably the biggest action sequence I’ve ever done.”

Scott is known for directing movies such as 1979’s Alien, 1982’s Blade Runner, 1985’s Legend, 1991’s Thelma & Louise, 2001’s Black Hawk Down, 2007’s American Gangster, 2012’s Prometheus, 2015’s The Martian, 2017’s Alien: Covenant, 2021’s The Last Duel, and 2023’s Napoleon, among other titles. He recently produced Alien: Romulus, which is now playing in United States theaters.

What is Gladiator II about?

“From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome,” the official synopsis reads. “Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”

The movie also stars Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Derek Jacobi, and more.

Gladiator II releases in United States theaters on November 22, 2024, from Paramount Pictures.
