Adam Sandler Baseball Movie With Josh Safdie Gets Promising Update

Adam Sandler has given a hopeful update about a planned card-collecting movie that has been in the works with Josh Safdie for years.

In a recent interview with Indiewire, Sandler spoke hopefully about the project, which has been delayed several times since its initial announcement in 2019. According to the actor, he spoke with Josh Safdie about the project recently, and has seen the “cool script.”

“It’s something that we talked about today,” Sandler said. “It’s hopefully going to come back. It’s crazy, it’s a cool script, very long. Josh doesn’t stop working hard.”

The film was originally reported to be in the works for Netflix in 2019. However, since then, the film has suffered multiple delays, both due to the COVID-19 pandemic (which stopped filming during baseball games from occurring) and then the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

What do we know about Adam Sandler’s baseball movie?

The untitled project will be directed by Josh Safdie from a screenplay he also wrote. Originally planned as a film from both Josh and Benny Safdie, the directing duo have since gone on a “temporary” split of sorts, with Benny also pursuing an acting career. This film will mark Josh Safdie’s second solo directorial feature, following 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed.

Besides Sandler, the project was rumored to feature an all-star ensemble cast including Ben Affleck, Megan Thee Stallion, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Steve Harvey. It’s unclear exactly who is involved with the project now after the many delays.

“Set in the world of high-end sports card collecting in the 1990s, a retired Baseball pitcher (Affleck) attempts a comeback as a sports memorabilia agent (Sandler) attempts to capitalize on his success,” read the initial synopsis for the film. “Megan Thee Stallion is said to play Affleck’s girlfriend.”
