Ruiner Video Game Being Adapted Into Movie, Wes Ball Will Direct

A Ruiner movie is in the works from Universal.

Developed by Reikon Games, Ruiner was initially released in September 2017. The twin-stick shooter video game takes place in the year 2901 in a futuristic cyberpunk city called Rengkok.

“The game follows a wired psychopath who fights against a corrupt system to uncover the truth and retrieve his kidnapped brother,” the official synopsis for the game reads. “Under the guidance of a mysterious hacker, he battles through a world of brutal violence and cutting-edge technology, inching closer to the dark secrets hidden within the city’s neon-lit streets.”

Per Variety, Universal Pictures has now acquired the rights to adapt Ruiner into a feature-length movie.

Wes Ball is attached to direct the Ruiner movie. Ball’s filmography includes 2014’s The Maze Runner, 2015’s Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, 2018’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure, and, most recently, 2024’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is now available to stream on Hulu.

Ball is also attached to direct a live-action Legend of Zelda movie for Nintendo and Sony Pictures. The film does not yet have a release date at this time.
