Despicable Me Director on if There Should Be a Live-Action Minions Movie: ‘God, I Hope Not’

Despicable Me director Chris Renaud doesn’t think the Minions need a live-action movie.

Renaud previously worked on a number of films in the Despicable Me franchise. He co-directed  2010’s Despicable Me and 2013’s Despicable Me 2 alongside Pierre Coffin, while he most recently solely helmed 2024’s Despicable Me 4.

He also served as an executive producer on 2015’s Minions and 2017’s Despicable Me 3, while he produced 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru.

What did Chris Renaud say about a live-action Minions movie?

Speaking to Film Hounds magazine, Renaud was asked if there was a possibility for Illumnation to explore a live-action Minions movie given the financial success Disney has had adapting some of their animated films into live-action.

“God, I hope not,” Renaud said. “That’s my answer.”

He continued, “I mean if there were conversations like that, I haven’t been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated and it allows us to get away with what we get away with. Like locking a minion in the vending machine, or you know, blowing up Gru when he attacks Vector (Jason Segel). These are really cartoon ideas, like what would have been in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. I think it just becomes something completely different if you do a live-action version. For me personally, not very appealing. But again, who knows what can happen but that’s my personal feeling about it.”

There has been no announcement regarding a live-action Minions or Despicable Me movie at this time.

There is, however, another Minions movie currently in the works. Releasing in United States theaters on June 30, 2027, Minions 3 will be written by Brian Lynch and directed by Coffin. Plot details remain under wraps at this time.

Despicable Me 4 is now available to rent or purchase on digital streaming outlets.
