Park Chan-wook is officially ready to step behind the camera once again, with his next film’s production set to begin this weekend.
According to a new report from THR, Park’s next film — I Can’t Help It — is set to begin production on Saturday. The movie will mark his 12th feature film and his latest since 2022’s Decision to Leave. For Park, it’ll also be his next project since he co-directed the HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, which recently wrapped up and starred Robert Downey Jr.
What do we know about I Can’t Help It?
Based on the 1996 Donald Westlake novel The Ax, I Can’t Help It will follow the story of a man named Man-soo who is laid off from his job. In a desperate move, the man then begins hunting down his competition, planning to kill them in an effort to regain his status.
The movie will star legendary Korean actors Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin, with the film set in Korea. The movie has no release information as of now, but the project is a long-awaited one for Park. In 2009, the directed announced he would be adapting the film, although other projects kept getting in the way.
Outside of The Sympathizer and Decision to Leave, Park is considered one of the greatest South Korean filmmakers of all time. Other high-profile films of his include 2003’s Oldboy, 2016’s The Handmaiden, 2013’s Stoker, and 200s’ Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
