Following the backlash over the removal of the kiss scene between the two main leads in Twisters, Glen Powell thinks everybody’s still a “winner” and finds it amusing that audiences actually “care” about the disaster movie.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters — a standalone sequel to the Bill Paxton-led 1996 Twister — centers on a storm chasers’ efforts to tame a massive tornado in Oklahoma. While the film accumulated impressive box office earnings, most viewers were not happy with the missing kiss scene between Powell’s Tyler Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones’s Kate Carter. Now, the actor is reacting to the outcry over the feature’s final cut.
“I’m taking it very personally! I’m sure you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes, where I did get to kiss Daisy Edgar-Jones, which really is all that counts. [Laughs] We had a great time, and I’m really proud of the movie,” Powell told ScreenRant. “I really think that even that [backlash] shows that people care, which is really great. I just love how excited people have gotten about that movie, and Daisy and I send each other the TikToks and the gifs.”
He continued, “There’s so much funny stuff coming out of it. It’s fun. That’s what summer movies are about. It creates this conversation and cultural moment, and people dress up and do the thing. It’s been really awesome. So, kiss or no kiss, everybody’s a winner.”
Why was the kiss scene cut from Twisters’ final version?
Though Powell and Edgar-Jones did lock lips, the scene didn’t make it to the film’s final cut. It was then revealed that the director opted not to include the kissing scene. He previously shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that including the scene “makes it seem as though that’s what Kate’s journey was all about, to end up with a kiss.”
Instead, the director thinks it’s better to end things with Kate “being able to continue doing what she’s doing” and that he thinks it’s a better ending.
The film also stars Anthony Ramos as Javi, Maura Tierney as Cathy, Brandon Perea as Boone, Daryl McCormack as Jeb, Sasha Lane as Lily, Kiernan Shipka as Addy, Nik Dodani as Praveen, David Corenswet as Scott, Harry Hadden-Paton as Ben, Tunde Adebimpe as Dexter, and Katy O’Brian as Dani.
