Ridley Scott Was ‘Hugely Relieved’ After Watching Alien: Romulus

Director Ridley Scott has been vocal about his praise of the upcoming Alien: Romulus, and recently opened up about how relieved he felt after seeing the film for the first time.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during the premiere for Romulus, Scott — who is a producer on the film — said he was “hugely relieved” when he saw the film. Despite knowing it would be a hit, Scott said he still offered up some notes to director Fede Álvarez.

“I was hugely relieved that it was potentially a huge film and I just said, ‘You don’t have to take a note but I’ll tell you what I think,'” said Scott.

The legendary filmmaker went on to say he told Álvarez some notes in person, rather than jotting down some notes. These included the idea to trim down the film a bit, noting that directors often make movies too long.

“Directors tend to make it too long; it was long so you don’t want to lose your dynamic,” Scott said. “The dynamics in this kind of movie are everything, and he had so much going on; he didn’t need so much.”

What is Alien: Romulus about?

Alien: Romulus will be the seventh official entry in the Alien franchise (or the ninth including the crossover movies with the Predator franchise) following 1979’s Alien, 1986’s Aliens, 1992’s Alien 3, 1997’s Alien Resurrection, 2004’s Alien vs. Predator, 2007’s Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, 2012’s Prometheus, and 2017’s Alien: Covenant. The new film is set between the events of Alien and Aliens.

“While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe,” the synopsis for the movie reads.

Alien: Romulus will be the fourth film directed by Fede Álvarez. It’s from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues based on characters made by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. The film’s cast includes Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Alien and Prometheus director/creator Ridley Scott is producing alongside Michael Pruss and Walter Hill.
