Superman Update Given by James Gunn, Why Reshoots Aren’t Expected

James Gunn has offered up a Superman update, revealing more of the post-production process on the film and also talking about why he won’t need too many reshoots.

What is the latest Superman update?

Gunn recently took to Threads to answer a handful of fan questions, where he was asked if he was nearly done with the film. The director and co-CEO of DC Studios said he wasn’t even close, and that a ton of post-production work like editing, VFX, and scoring was still to be done.

In a reply to that original post, Gunn also brought up reshoots. A fan mentioned that reshoots could add time to a project, and Gunn replied he had no idea, because he’d only done “a total of one day of reshoots” across his last two films.

In a separate answer, Gunn detailed why he often didn’t need reshoots, noting that being over-prepared, having a finished script, capable actors, and more were key to not having to need additional footage.

“Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

The titular role of Superman is being played by David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician), while Lois Lane will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. They’re joined by Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and more. The film is set to release on July 11, 2025.

The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows
