Elizabeth Banks says that her The Invisible Woman movie is no longer in active development.
In 2019, it was announced that Banks was directing, producing, and starring in a new adaptation of The Invisible Woman. There’s been little news about the project since then; although, Leigh Whannell has since made The Invisible Man, which was released by Universal Pictures in February 2020.
Speaking to ComicBook, Banks revealed that, given a sequel to The Invisible Man is in the early stages of development, her Invisible Woman movie has been put on hold at this time.
What did Elizabeth Banks say about her The Invisible Woman movie?
“For one thing, what happened was they made an Invisible Man movie, and they’re making another one,” Banks said. “So I think Universal wants to see that through. I’m really interested in the idea that we have, and it is still there, but it’s not something I’m actively working on in this moment in time. I’m making a television show right now. Then I got to go make another television show, and then we’ll see what the heck we’re going to do.”
Banks has directed a number of projects before, including 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2, 2019’s Charlie’s Angels, and 2023’s Cocaine Bear. She’s now starring in a new crime thriller movie called Skincare, which releases in United States theaters on August 16, 2024, from IFC Films.
Whannell’s The Invisible Man starred Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Harriet Dyer, and Michael Dorman. It made approximately $144.5 million at the global box office off an estimated $7 million budget.
While Whannell is currently working on Wolf Man for Blumhouse, Moss told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in April 2024 that she believed they were “closer than we have ever been to cracking” the story. Further details remain under wraps at this time.
