A Britney Spears biopic movie is in the works.

In 2023, Spears’ memoir novel, The Woman in Me, was published by Gallery Books. It quickly proved to be a massive hit, having sold over 2.5 million copies and becoming a #1 New York Times Bestseller.

Per Deadline, The Woman in Me is now being turned into a feature film for Universal Pictures. No casting announcements have been made at this time.

What else do we know about the Britney Spears biopic movie?

The Britney Spears biopic will be directed by Jon M. Chu. Chu’s filmography as a director includes 2008’s Step Up 2: The Streets, 2010’s Step Up 3D, 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, 2015’s Jem and the Holograms, 2016’s Now You See Me 2, 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, and 2021’s In the Heights.

Chu is also directing the two-part adaptation of Wicked, which stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda. Wicked releases in United States that November, while Wicked: Part Two arrives in 2025.

Marc Platt, who worked with Chu on the Wicked movies, will produce the Britney Spears biopic.

“In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history,” a description of the novel reads. “Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.”

An official release date for Chu’s Britney Spears biopic has not yet been announced.
