Bioshock Movie Update Given, Netflix Film Will Be ‘More Personal’

A new Bioshock movie update has been offered up by one of the film’s producer, shedding light on what the plan is now for the movie adaptation of the iconic video game.

What was the latest Bioshock movie update?

Speaking during a panel at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, producer Roy Lee was asked about the project, and revealed that following various creative changes at Netflix, the movie’s budget has shrunken, resulting in what will be a different movie overall.

“The new regime has lowered the budgets,” Lee said. “So we’re doing a much smaller version. … It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”

A Bioshock movie was originally announced in 2022, with Francis Lawrence tapped to direct the project. However, since the movie’s announcement, Netflix’s film head has seen a shuffle, with Dan Lin replacing Scott Stuber. Lin’s strategy of refocusing Netflix’s film slate is likely what led to the restructuring of Bioshock’s budget.

This isn’t the first time that a Bioshock film has been in the works, with a previous attempt at adapting the film having been tried in 2008. That film was supposed to be helmed by Rango director Gore Verbinski; however, things ended up not working out. Verbinski was quite vocal on the film’s main issues, as he wanted an R-rated film but couldn’t get the financial support for such a rating.
