An I Am Legend 2 director may have been found according to a new report from Deadline, which notes that Steven Caple Jr. is in talks to helm the highly anticipated sequel.
The latest report notes that nothing has been made official or signed just yet, but that Caple Jr. is the candidate that Warner Bros. hopes to land for the film. He and Michael B. Jordan — who is set to star in the film alongside Will Smith — have worked together on the hit boxing movie Creed II.
Caple Jr. has also directed 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, as well as 2016’s The Land, a crime drama film starring Jorge Lendeborg Jr.
A sequel to I Am Legend was announced to be in the works in 2022, but there hasn’t been much in the way of updates since then. Last year, writer Akiva Goldsman opened up about what the film could potentially include, revealing that it may be set decades into the future.
What do we know about I Am Legend 2?
“This will start a few decades later than the first,” Goldsman said. “I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the empire state building, but the possibilities are endless.”
The original I Am Legend was based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. It was a hit when it premiered in 2007 and opened to the largest-ever box office for a non-Christmas movie at the time and was the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2007.
