X-Men MCU Update Teased by Kevin Feige: ‘It’s an Embarrassment of Riches’

An X-Men MCU movie has been something fans have been clamoring for for years, and when it comes to who might be in the live-action film’s team, Kevin Feige knows there’s tons to choose from.

Speaking to io9, the Marvel Studios head was asked about how the company would narrow down who to mainly feature in a potential upcoming film. Feige said he knows there’s a lot to choose from, and noted that fans would likely see some familiar and not-so-familiar faces.

“Well, it’s that phrase we use often at Marvel, which is ‘It’s an embarrassment of riches,’” Feige said. “And there are a lot of great X-Men characters in the Deadpool & Wolverine film. There are a lot of great X-Men characters in all of the Fox versions of the X-Men films. And there are a lot of great X-Men characters that have never gone on the big screen. So I think as we always try to do, as we did when we made the arrangement with Sony for Spider-Man, you’ll probably see a mix of characters you’ve seen before and characters you’ve never seen before.”

Feige also touched on the Disney+ animated series X-Men ’97, which was a massive hit, was exciting for Marvel Studios to see just how much people care about the world of X-Men.

“I think the success of X-Men ’97 was really exciting for us to see people revisit and reconnect with that world,” he continued. “And dare I say, the soap opera elements of that world, which is one of the things that’s so exciting to us about jumping into it finally in the MCU.”

What do we know about the X-Men in the MCU?

An X-Men film from Marvel Studios is something that fans have been hoping to see made for some time now. Currently, there are no casting or even crew decisions that have been made on a possible new X-Men film.

However, several actors have been floated around in rumors. This includes Giancarlo Esposito, who has openly said that he’d love to play Charles Xavier — Professor X — in the film.

While no live-action news is available as of yet, Marvel Studios is still showing love to the X-Men franchise. References to the X-Men in the MCU have come in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. In the closing minutes of the finale, it’s revealed that Kamala has her powers due to a mutation in her genetics, at which point the iconic X-Men animated series theme music players.

On the animated front, the Disney+ series X-Men ’97 has been praised as an instant classic, and one of the best X-Men series ever created. X-Men ’97 just wrapped up its first season, with a second already in the works.
