The Surfer, a new thriller movie starring Nicolas Cage, has been acquired by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions.
The Surfer held its world premiere at the Midnight Screenings section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where it received a six-minute standing ovation. The movie is directed by Lorcan Finnegan, who previously made 2016’s Without Name, 2019’s Vivarium, and 2022’s Nocebo.
Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have officially acquired the North American distribution rights to The Surfer. The movie will be released in United States theaters in 2025.
“Lorcan’s movie is a stunning visual experience with an incredible palette, coupled with Nicolas Cage at his absolute best,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Lauren Bixby. “We could not be more proud to bring this film to theaters
Roadside Attractions co-presidents Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen added, “We cannot wait for The Surfer to ride the theatrical wave next year. One man’s gnarly quest to introduce his son to a legendary surf spot ranks among the greatest Nicolas Cage performances.”
What is The Surfer about?
“In the film, a man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, but is humiliated by a group of powerful locals and drawn into a conflict that rises with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him right to his breaking point,” the logline reads.
Along with Cage, The Surfer stars Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak, Rahel Romahn, Finn Little, and Charlotte Maggi.
The script for the movie was written by Thomas Martin. Cage produces the film alongside Leonora Darby, James Harris, Robert Connolly, James Grandison, Brunella Cocchiglia, and Nathan Klingher, while Finnegan, Apur Parikh, Robert Patterson, Mark Lane, Michael Rothstein, Sam Hall, Ford Corbett, Mark Fasano, Ryan Winterstern, Josh Harris, Greg Friedman, Jatin Desai, and François Tétaz serve as executive producers.
