What is Gladiator II about?

“From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome,” the official synopsis reads. “Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”

Along with Mescal, the upcoming sequel stars Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius, Denzel Washington as Macrinus, and Connie Nielsen, who was also in the original Gladiator movie, as Lucilla.

The cast additionally includes Derek Jacobi, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Lior Raz.

The screenplay was written by David Scarpa (who recently worked with Scott on 2023’s Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix), based on a story by Scarpa and Peter Craig. In addition to directing the film, Scott produces Gladiator II alongside Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher, Michael Pruss, and David Franzoni. Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, Raymond Kirk, and Aidan Elliot serve as executive producers.

Gladiator II will be released in United States theaters on November 22, 2024, from Paramount Pictures. Gladiator, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+.
