In addition to Mescal, Pascal, and Washington, Gladiator II will see Connie Nielsen reprise her role as Lucilla in the film. Lucillia is the mother of Lucius Verus, the character being played by Mescal. He was previously portrayed by Spencer Treat Clark in the 2000 movie.
Also starring in Gladiator II are Derek Jacobi, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, May Calamawy, Tim McInnerny, and Alexander Karim.
The script for Gladiator II was written by David Scarpa, based on a story by Scarpa (who recently worked with Scott on 2023’s Napoleon) and Peter Craig. Scott produces the movie alongside Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher, Michael Pruss, and David Franzoni, while Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, Raymond Kirk, and Aidan Elliot serve as executive producers.
Mescal previously said of his character in Gladiator II, via Vanity Fair, “He wants nothing to do with the image of Rome. He wants nothing to do with it other than to tear it apart initially. The Romans were some savage, savage individuals. They would go from continent to continent and just destroy communities and nations. The film doesn’t shy away from the kind of brutality of that, and the emperors at the center of it, and this kind of corrupted power that he can see through. There’s a wonderful clarity to him. He’s unafraid of the establishment in a way that makes him dangerous to the establishment.”
Gladiator II releases in United States theaters on November 22, 2024, from Paramount Pictures.
