The final wave of Fantasia 2024 festival movie premieres has been revealed. Doctor Sleep and Midnight Mass director Mike Flanagan is also set to be honored at the festival.
The genre festival already has a packed lineup from its initial wave of reveals, but the final wave offers up some tasty genre treats.
First up, Fantasia 2024 is honoring U.S. filmmaker Mike Flanagan with this year’s Cheval Noir career award. Previous recipients include genre icons such as John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, and Nicolas Cage. Flanagan will be attending the festival to accept his award, take part in an artist talk, and promote the previously announced World Premiere of Chris Stuckman’s hotly-anticipated Shelby Oaks, which he produced.
Fantasia 2024 will run from July 18 through August 4, 2024. Ticket presales open at 10 AM EST on July 5, 2024.
Fantasia 2024 final wave of festival premieres
The festival’s Closing Night film will be André Forcier’s period dramedy Ababouine. The movie is about a rowdy group of kids fighting back against the Catholic church in 1957 Montréal. The World Premiere title stars a who’s who of Quebec’s most iconic actors, including Rémy Girard (The Barbarian Invasions), Gaston Lepage (Jesus of Montreal), and Pascale Montpetit (District 31).
Notable World Premieres in the Fantasia 2024 final wave include In Our Blood, the narrative debut of Oscar-winning documentarian Pedro Kos. The film stars Brittany O’Grady of The White Lotus and Frankie Freako, the latest from beloved genre icon Steven Kostanski. That’s one I’m looking forward to as a big fan of Kostanski’s Psycho Goreman.
Beyond that is COVID-19-set black comedy The Code, from filmmaker Eugene Kotlyarenko (Spree); Deaner ’89, an 80s-set hair-rock from the creator of the heavy metal FUBAR movies; the Elias Koteas-starring The Silent Planet, from TIFF darling Jeffrey St. Jules; and Black Eyed Susan, the shockingly dark new psychosexual drama from underground legend Scooter McCrae, starring Damian Maffei (The Strangers: Prey at Night).
