Sony Pictures and Legendary have set a release date for its live-action Street Fighter movie despite Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philipou departing the project earlier this month.
Street Fighter movie release date sees battle with Ryan Gosling
The Street Fighter movie release date sees it go head-to-head with Ryan Gosling’s space film Project Hail Mary. Both will hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
Right now, nothing else is known about the Street Fighter movie based on the long-running Capcom fighting game series. It has no cast and no director after scheduling conflicts forced the Philipou’s to shift focus to their A24 movie Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt. Production was due to begin soon, but understandably, that will likely have been set back a fair bit. Still, there’s plenty of time to get it back on track. Sony must be somewhat confident of a backup plan if it was able to put out a release date.
Whoever is attached to it will do well to escape the infamous shadow of the 1994 live-action adaptation. A film based on the title was released, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, and Ming-Na Wen. It was panned on release, but it’s ended up with a cult following in the decades since.
Beyond that, there have been animated shows and live-action spin-offs, like the 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and the 2014 web series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist.
