St. Elmo’s Fire 2: Sequel Being Explored by Sony

A “new horizon” may be ahead for an ’80s box office smash.

Sony is reportedly exploring the possibility of creating a St. Elmo’s Fire 2, reuniting the original cast of the iconic 1985 movie.

According to a recent report from Deadline, Sony has begun discussing ways in which to make “a new version” of the coming-of-age film following the success of the Hulu documentary Brats, which reunited members of the film.

Currently, it’s unknown what, if any, groundwork has been laid to make a new film, or what one would even look like.

However, Deadline notes the film would follow the characters after they had grown up and found jobs following their transition out of college and into careers in the first film, and would hinge on returning the main cast of the film, including Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham.

What do we know about St. Elmo’s Fire 2?

This isn’t the first time that a continuation of St. Elmo’s Fire has been discussed. In 2019, it was reported that NBC was developing a television series based on the film, however nothing has come from that as of yet.

St. Elmo’s Fire was directed by the late Joel Schumacher and co-written by Schumacher and Carl Kurlander. The movie was released in 1985 and, despite negative reviews, was a box office hit. The film followed a group of recent college graduates in Washington, D.C., and their adjustment to post-college life and entering the adult world.

The film is also widely considered as one of the most prominent movies of the “Brat Pack” genre, a play on the Rat Pack from the 1950s and 1960s, and referenced cast members that appeared in both john Hughe’s The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire. Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Lowe, McCarthy, Moore, Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy are often cited as the core members of the group.
