Monsters, Inc. 2 Sequel Update Given by Pixar’s Pete Docter

The Monsters, Inc. franchise has seen its fair share of projects, but a true sequel to the 2001 animated film has not been made. However, Pixar CCO Pete Docter recently shared an update on the project.

What is the Monsters, Inc. 2 sequel update?

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Docter — who directed the original Monsters, Inc., as well as Pixar films Up, Inside Out, and Soul — briefly touched on the Monsters, Inc. franchise, and revealed that the team at Pixar have long been trying to figure out what a sequel would look like.

“I always thought there was some rule that would be the formula for what films become franchises or what gets sequels, and there isn’t,” said Docter when asked what films “deserve” to be franchised. “It’s much looser, but obviously, it’s based on all of the above. We have to find something we think is worthy, first and foremost. It should be something hopefully the audience responded to — and then we could still not find anything. We’ve been searching for ideas for a Monsters, Inc. sequel for a long time, and we haven’t seen enough to start working on anything there yet.”
