Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence, has been given a production window.
According to Alberta’s Calgary Herald, Die, My Love will begin filming this coming summer. A release date for the film has not yet been set.
What do we know about Die, My Love?
Die, My Love is based on a 2019 novel of the same name by Ariana Harwicz.
“In a forgotten patch of French countryside, a woman is battling her demons: embracing exclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, yearning for family life but wanting to burn the entire house down,” the novel’s description reads. “Given surprising leeway by her family for her increasingly erratic behavior, she nevertheless feels ever more stifled and repressed. Motherhood, womanhood, the banality of love, the terrors of desire, the brutality of ‘another person carrying your heart forever’: Die, My Love faces all this with a raw intensity. It’s not a question of if a breaking point will be reached, but rather when, and how violent a form will it take?”
Ramsay previously told Variety about the film, “It’s quite simple. It’s not set in the Arctic. It’s not in a boat. It’s just them in a house, it’s just them in a village, so it’s easy to make.”
Ramsay also said that Lawrence was the one who first sent her a copy of Harwicz’s novel. “She just really responded to the material, which is hardcore in some ways, because it’s about postnatal depression and bipolar [disorder],” she explained. “But it’s funny as well. Well, I’ve made it funny. I think I’ve made it funny. I hope I’ve made it funny.”
Ramsay is known for making 1999’s Ratcatcher, 2002’s Morvern Callar, 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, and 2017’s You Were Never Really Here. She also has another movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, which will be titled either Polaris or Dark Slides, that wrapped production in 2023.
