Will Smith has been cast in Resistor, a new sci-fi movie being made by Sony Pictures.
Resistor is based on a 2014 novel titled Influx by Daniel Suarez. Smith’s casting comes shortly after Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which the Men in Black actor stars in alongside Martin Lawrence, opened in theaters on June 7, 2024. The film has so far grossed $215.4 million at the global box office off an estimated $100 million budget.
What will Will Smith and Sony’s Resistor be about?
“Particle physicist Jon Grady is ecstatic when his team achieves what they’ve been working toward for years: a device that can reflect gravity,” the description of the Influx novel reads. “Their research will revolutionize the field of physics — the crowning achievement of a career. Grady expects widespread acclaim for his entire team. The Nobel. Instead, his lab is locked down by a shadowy organization whose mission is to prevent at all costs the social upheaval sudden technological advances bring. This Bureau of Technology Control uses the advanced technologies they have harvested over the decades to fulfill their mission.”
The first draft of the script for Resistor was written by Zak Olkewicz, while the most recent draft comes from Eric Singer.
Smith and Westbrook’s Jon Mone have been developing the project for some time with Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, and Tony Shaw. Heather Washington serves as an executive producer, and Dave Wilson is a producer.
A director is not yet attached to Resistor, and, according to Deadline, it is not expected to be the next film that Smith stars in. He’s also attached to appear in a thriller movie titled Sugar Bandits from Sicario: Day of the Soldado director Stefano Sollima, while a sequel to 2007’s I Am Legend is also being developed.
