Tom Hardy Doesn’t Think Mad Max: The Wasteland Is Going to Happen

Tom Hardy doesn’t think George Miller’s Mad Max: The Wasteland movie is going to happen.

Speaking with Forbes, Tom Hardy was asked what kind of roles he might be taking on in the future following The Bikeriders (releasing June 21, 2024) and Venom: The Last Dance (releasing October 25, 2024).

While Hardy noted he has “a secret thing” that he’s building up, he said of Mad Max: The Wasteland, “I don’t think that’s happening.”

Why Mad Max: The Wasteland might not happen, explained

Miller has openly discussed wanting to make another Mad Max movie following the release of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and 2024’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga; however, he’s also said that the project, which has been referred to as Mad Max: The Wasteland, would depend on the reception toward Furiosa.

While it received largely positive reviews from both fans and critics, Furiosa has so far grossed approximately $168 million at the global box office off an estimated budget of $160 million.

Neither Warner Bros. nor Miller — who also directed 1979’s Mad Max and 1981’s Mad Max 2, while he co-directed 1985’s Mad Max Beyond — have definitely said that Mad Max: The Wasteland isn’t moving forward, meaning there’s always the possibility that the film could eventually see the light of day.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in May 2024, however, that there are “diminishing hopes” for Mad Max: The Wastelander following Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga’s disappointing box office numbers.

Hardy played “Mad” Max Rockatansky in Fury Road, which also starred Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Hugh Keays-Byrne. His character makes a brief cameo in Furiosa, which is primarily led by Anya Taylor-Joy, who is playing a younger version of Theron’s Fury Road character.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is still playing in theaters in the United States. Mad Max: Fury Road is available to watch on Max.
